![]() A young boy named Christopher Robin visited the London Zoo regularly, and fell in love with Winnie. Harry visited Winnie whenever he was on leave, but he ended up donating Winnie to the zoo because she was so popular with everyone, and he felt it was unfair to take her back to Canada with him. Winnie became the mascot of the Brigade for which Harry worked, and even went with the unit to Britian! Harry took care of his dear friend very well, and she even stayed on the base with him! Winnie literally lived on a military base with the troops! Later on, Harry was promoted to Captain, and he could not take Winnie with him to his new position, so, Winnie stayed at the London Zoo. He named her "Winnipeg," after his hometown, but he called her "Winnie" for short. Who Is Winnie The Pooh? This story began with a Canadian lieutenant-turned-Captian named Harry Colebourn, who bought a black bear cub for $20 from a hunter who had killed her mother. Winnie-The-Bear did all of this, AND she inspired the classic character, Winnie-The-Pooh. ![]() The zoo treasured her because of her loving and tame behavior, and built two statues in honor of their special friend. At the London Zoo, Winnie became a friend to many, especially young Christopher Robin. ![]() The photographs that they took of Winnie became precious memories for them to take home and cherish forever.
